Dataset: The Health of Houston Survey 2018 Pre-Harvey

Variable PUMAName: PUMA common name

Literal Question

This variable was developed from several questions designed to identify the geographic area or ZIPCode in which the respondent resides, in order to ensure their eligibility for this survey. Of particular importance were questions PHOU_2b and PHOU_3, which asked for the names of the street or nearest street corner of the respondent. Using these data, a geographic information system (GIS) program was used to 'geocode' or locate the PUMA in which the respondent lived. A list of the 38 PUMAs and their designations can be found in our metadata, in the section entitled Other Study Description Materials.

Descriptive Text

The variable identifies names of the Public Use Microdata Area in which a household is located. Names were assigned by the survey team based on communities that reside in each PUMA. PUMA name relates to PUMA actual five-digit identifiers in PUMA variable. A Public Use Microdata Area, or PUMA, is a geographic unit used by the US Census to provide statistical and demographic information. Each PUMA must contain at least 100,000 people. In Harris County, there are 38 PUMAs. We found that the geographic areas identified by these PUMAs provide an excellent representation of Harris County neighborhoods and communities. A list of the 38 PUMAs and their designations can be found in our metadata, in the section entitled Other Study Description Materials. A map of these areas, with their community names, is also available in this section. More detailed information is available at the United States Census Bureau Website https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-areas/pumas.html.
