The variable was created from multiple survey questions, specifically L1a.-L1j., L2., L2a. for adults and M1a.-M1j., M2. and M2a. for children.
The variable was calculated from a series of yes/no questions for multiple types of insurance. The type of insurance variables were created independently for adults (h_ins_ad) and children (h_ins_ch) and then combined to describe the population as a whole using three categories: private insurance (self/employer purchased and TRICARE/Champus), public insurance (Medicare, Medicaid, Champ VA, VA) and no insurance. To generate the types of insurance variables, respondents with multiple types of insurance were counted only once based on common rates of insurance from the ACS. To see the order of precedence for the adult (h_ins_ad) and child (h_ins_ch) variables see the related metadata. For example, if an adult respondent was over 65 and had "Medicare" and "Private" insurance they were only counted as "Public insurance." The universe for this variable includes all respondents, adults and children.
