The variable was created from multiple survey questions, specifically L1a.-L1j., L2., L2a. for adults and M1a.-M1j., M2. and M2a. for children.
The variable was calculated from a series of yes/no questions for multiple types of insurance and was recoded into "Yes, has Medicaid or CHIP" or "No Medicaid or CHIP." This variable differs from the variable labeled "Health Insurance Coverage, all cases" in its treatment of multiple insurance types for a respondent. For "Health Insurance Coverage, all cases," respondents with multiple types of insurance were counted only once based on common rates of insurance from the ACS. However, for "Has Medicaid (includes CHIP)," a respondent was counted as having Medicaid or CHIP even if the respondent also reported having another type of insurance. The universe for this variable includes all respondents, including adults and children.
