Dataset: The Health of Houston Survey 2010

Variable exer_rec: Physical activity recommendations [C]

Literal Question

The variable was created from multiple survey questions, specifically T14., T15., T16., and T17.

Descriptive Text

Responses to multiple survey questions were first used to calculate the "Weekly Aerobic Activity Minutes" for each respondent. Responses for vigorous minutes of activity were multiplied by 2 to get a comparable level of physical activity minutes, which were then combined with responses for moderate minutes. The 2008 Health and Human Services Recommendations (http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/adults.html) were used for cut-offs. These indicate that 2.5 hours moderate or 1.25 hours vigorous physical activity per week are the minimum recommendations for health. Additionally they provide recommendations that for even greater health benefits people do 5 hours of moderate or 2.5 hours of vigorous physical activity per week. The two categories created here are: Meets recommendations - Meets or exceeds aerobic physical activity recommendations of at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes (1.75 hours) of vigorous physical activity. Does not meet recommendations - Reports less than the minimum amount of physical activity. The universe for this variable includes all adult respondents age 18 and older.
