Dataset: The Health of Houston Survey 2018

Variable h_ins_ad: Health insurance type, adult [C]

Literal Question

The variable was created from multiple survey questions, specifically AHI_1 (01-05), AHI_1GO, and AHI_2.

Descriptive Text

The Health insurance type variable was calculated from a series of yes/no questions including multiple types of insurance. Insurance types included private (self/employer purchased and TRICARE/Champus), Medicare, other public (Medicaid, Champ VA, VA) and no insurance. Respondents with multiple types of insurance were counted only once based on common rates of insurance from the ACS. For respondents less than 65 years old with multiple insurance types, precedence was given in the following order: 1) "Private" 2) "Other Public" and 3) “Medicare”, which is rare coverage for adults under 65 years. For respondents 65 and over the order was: 1) “Medicare”, 2) "Private", and 3) "Other Public." For example, if a respondent was over 65 and had "Medicare" and "Private" insurance they were counted as "Medicare." The universe for this variable includes all adults age 18 and older.
