Dataset: The Health of Houston Survey 2018

Variable exer_rec: Physical activity recommendations [C]

Literal Question

The variable was created from multiple survey questions, specifically DPA_6-DPA_7B.

Descriptive Text

Responses to multiple survey questions were first used to calculate the "Weekly Aerobic Activity Minutes" for each respondent. Responses for vigorous minutes of activity were multiplied by 2 to get a comparable level of physical activity minutes, which were then combined with responses for moderate minutes. Cut-offs from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition (2018) recommendations (https://health.gov/paguidelines/second-edition/pdf/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf) were used. These indicate that although some physical activity is better than none, 2.5 hours moderate or 1.25 hours vigorous physical activity per week are the minimum recommended for substantial health benefits. Additional health benefts are gained by engaging in physical activity beyond the equivalent of 300 minutes (5 hours) of moderate-intensity physical activity a week. The universe for this variable includes all adult respondents age 18 and older.
