The variable was created from multiple survey questions, specifically M1a.-M1j., M2. and M2a.
The Type of Insurance variable was calculated from a series of yes/no questions including multiple types of insurance. Insurance types include private (self/employer purchased and TRICARE/Champus), Medicaid, other public (Medicare, Champ VA, VA) and no Insurance. Children with multiple types of insurance were counted only once based on team experience and common rates of insurance from the ACS. Precedence was given to insurance types in the following order: 1) “Medicaid”, 2) “Other Public” and 3) “Private”. For example, if a child had "Medicaid" and "Other Public" insurance they were counted as "Medicaid" since rates of "Other Public" are generally extremely low. The universe for this variable includes all children age 0 to 17.
